Stunning qualifying laps, miscommunications, steering columns, gearboxes, penalties, comebacks, rain, shine, bad luck… more bad luck… and we’re only two races into the season! What more can the rollercoaster of Formula 1 throw our way?

Both drivers have shown good pace during the various sessions in both Australia and Malaysia. Perhaps with slightly better fortunes, particularly for Romain, the team could be sitting in a very strong position heading into the next race in China.

As it is, the potential shown by the E20 has not quite yielded the results it deserves, but that word is the key; potential, as Technical James Allison explains:

“It’s disappointing not to have come away with the amount of points to back up the promise we’ve shown, but having said that we’re very pleased with that promise. We came away from the first two races last season with two podiums, but I wouldn’t trade that for what we have now. I think what we’ve seen so far bodes very well for the next eighteen races as long as keep working hard on development. The gap between ourselves and the leaders last year was enormous, whereas we’re right at the sharp end this year. I’m feeling positive”

What’s clear from what we’ve learnt at four different circuits so far – including testing at Jerez and Barcelona – is that the latest Enstone creation is not only a solid package, but has the pace to deliver results in the right hands.

Speaking of the right hands, there can be no doubt that we have them on the wheel. If there were any questions as to the respective abilities of Kimi and Romain to adapt to the sport after a two year absence, they have surely been answered. Speed, consistency, and a real fit with the team are evident for all to see, and a good omen for the future.

Of course the drivers only make up part of the story. Late nights, early mornings, thousands of miles, and a good number of complications have served only to spur on the mechanics, engineers, support crew, and every member of the Enstone family.

So what we can expect from here? After such an unpredictable start it’s surely impossible to say. One thing is for sure; the future looks bright for Lotus F1 Team, and we’re already looking forward to the next chapter.
